TURKISH HAMMAM

It is our tradition to host guests in Turkish bath… Tradition of hammam is rooted in Romans; Turks who came to Anatolia merged their bath tradition with Roman and Byzantine traditions. Cleanliness and hygiene rules of Islam were added onto it and so a new concept arose in respect of using water: “Turkish Bath”. Turkish bath which at first emerged as a different type of bath then became corporate and formed its own tradition. The word “hammam” which means the place where Turkish bath is taken was coined and Turkish Bath turned into Turkish Hammam. Hammam which is a great pleasure for some is a great source of curiosity for others. During the hammam time which starts when you wear the waist cloth (peshtemal), you can sweat by lying on the central massage platform and then you can leave yourself into delicate and affectionate hands of bath attendants (rubbers) to be rubbed or massaged.

The Turkish hamam, called the “steamy sister” of the dry sauna, has long played a role in Middle Eastern and particularly Turkish history and society. Like so much else in Turkish culture, the hamam dates back to the Ottoman Empire. The steam bath in Ottoman times had three basic functions: a place for social gathering; ritual cleansing connected to the Muslim faith which required spiritual and physical cleanliness; and an architectural witness to the sultan’s greatness, power and wealth.

  • What Equipments are Used in the Turkish Bath?

The peshtemal is the most-known Turkish Bath equipment with its traditional patterns. People love peshtemal’s traditional pattern and it reminds people of past times. Peshtemal is used to wrap your body in the Hammam.

The second equipment is a ‘kessa glove’ or a bath pouch which is a bit hard and it has special texture to give good peeling to the body. The kesse glove is the modern synthetic equivalent of the original Oriental hand-knitted wash cloth.

The other equipments you need in the Hammam are soap, shampoo and towel. All equipments are given to you in the Hammam if you would want to buy them or you should bring your own .
